It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Russell (Rusty) Harris.
Russell had been involved with speedway dating back to the 1964/65 season where he first got the 'speedway bug' and saw him go on to complete an outstanding 53 seasons as track announcer and speedway journalist, giving back to the sport that has given him so much pleasure.
Russell’s contribution to speedway included his commentating career at Palmerston North Speedway in the 1975/76 season and continued through to 1982 when he was replaced because of a conflict involving local radio stations. During the mid-90’s he returned for a further three-year stint before another change, and became involved again with the current promotion in the 2003/04 season until the end of 2016/17.
Over this period of more than 40 years he acquired a vast knowledge of speedway history, which was invaluable in his commentary and also his ability to have pivotal roles in milestone celebrations at Palmerston North Speedway - including the 75th Anniversary where Russell helped put together a memorable weekend, along with the endless hours spent piecing together the 75th Anniversary book for Palmerston North Speedway. Russell was also instrumental in the planning of the iconic evening 'The Tank Reunion' which still to this day is spoken about one of the best evenings Speedway has ever had. Along with the successful evening Russell assisted in the production of the book 'The Tank' which is now a sought-after publication amongst speedway followers.
His memorable commentary sayings “the things with wings”, “she’s all over red rover”, “if this doesn’t turn you on, you haven’t got a switch” and "he's a gone burger!" will remain in the minds of many people who have attended speedway events in Palmerston North. The iconic voice with the extensive background knowledge of all motorsport and distinct sense of humour leaves behind an outstanding legacy.
Rest easy Russell, you have earned it.
