Massive Opening Sets The Scene

A huge number of competitors assembled under gray skies to kick off the 2019/20 season at the Robertson Holden International Speedway last night.

A capacity 36-car Superstock field featured visitors from all around the country, with placings shared around as competitors worked bugs out of their newly rebuilt machines. 19p Josh Dorn won the first race of the season, with 8p Scott Miers looking good in the ex-Jake Baker beast taking out the feature. 471k Benji Sneddon was also right on the pace, picking up a race win.

Similar numbers in the Stockcar class saw even more retirements and action, with half of the field failing to reach the finish line of the opening race. 15p Luke Miers won the first and almost pipped 6v Dion Mooney in the feature, spinning the race leader across the finish line but narrowly missing out. 5b Regan Penn won the second race and was quick all night.

Sprintcar 21w Stephen Taylor had an eventful evening, looking rapid on his way to a race win and cantering away in the lead of the feature. That was until his car caught a rut and was spat into the catch fence, handing the win to 2nzp Jamie Larsen. 18p Greg Pickerill was victorious in the second race.

93p Karl McGill got the better of 2nzp Shane Dewar in the opening Minisprint outing, but came a cropper with the first roll of the season in the following race. 53v Dylan Smith took out the second and 72p Elliot Heron led much of the feature, but was eventually overwhelmed by Dewar.

A big field of Sidecars had their feature races trimmed from the programme as the rain affected surface became unsuitable. 5p Kieran Payne & Mikey O’Neill took the best win of the night, resisting the challenge of 96p Mark Whye & Jacob Cooper and 21p Glen Murray & Ann Plummer. 27b Craig Boaler & Tony Drake had a race win and retired while leading their second, handing victory to 24p Stu Sowry & Dean Harding.
